Sheehy Bail Bonds

 Sheehy Bail Bonds

This one involves not just Greg but the entire Sheehy household who came through with green colors when we needed them the most.  I was jarred from sleep one early morning by a phone call from Men's Central Jail where my brother was being released from his detainment the night before. He had been driving with a car full of drunks down the Long Beach Freeway when he was pulled over. by the CHP at the Imperial exit.  He had almost talked his way out of trouble when a besotted damn fool said to the cop "I smell bacon" and suddenly the whole brew soaked crew was in the backseat of a cruiser. Not only did they take my brother to jail but they impounded his car. Being that the man was in the middle of a phase where he was broke most of the time there was no way he had the amount of money needed to get his car out of hock. Banks were not open until 10 but it was a moot point anyway since there was nothing to take out of our banks. It was like 6 am and the only family I knew who were up at such an early hour was the Sheehy's so we headed for McNerney. They were indeed up and John and Grace were sitting at the breakfast nook enjoying some real nourishment. My brother pleaded his case and John was understanding while promising not to let BC know about his recalcitrant son. Grace even fixed us some vittles and John pealed off some twenties to take down to Viertel tow yard where Stephen could retrieve his automobile and get to work that same day. It took some maneuvering but Stephen kept his license, his job and his great love for John Sheehy. As I remember the kitchen on that stressful day it was a great relief to bask in that Sheehy glow plus sip a cup of Folgers coffee and a plate of eggs. Stephen was lucky they just released him and that his broke brother could get down to Bauchet street and collect that sadder but wiser cat.
