Suck it up woman


     This one is taken from a moment of Greg glory in a Turkey Day tussle touch football game that was part of the Sheehy family thanksgiving days up in Altadena. It may or may not have been modeled on the Kennedy's at Cape Cod contests.  I played in a couple of said battles and they were light hearted affairs with plenty of false bravado supplied by the men of valor who played on this gridiron at Farnsworth Park. Maureen actually filmed one of the games and still has the 8 ml. reel of precious memories. The games I played in were from the early 70's so we were full grown,  full of piss and vinegar and maybe a cold beer or two. During the game I was lined up as a defensive back and Greg was the end opposite me. There was a play where the football was hurled deep and the two of us came together trying to snatch the pigskin out of the sky. Greg grabbed the ball away from me and saw me tumble, then shouted back on his way to paydirt "Suck it up woman!" An explanation is necessary since this is obviously a sexist remark that infers women are less than men and calling a player a woman is an insult. However; Greg was ironically yelling this as a typical football curse. I never knew him to be in any way mysoginistic or denigrating of women but he was reacting as a macho jock would in a real game. Still, it would never go over in today's Turkey Day Tussle but then again I would not make much of a D-back at 77 years of age.

  alright mother- “You can find poetry in your everyday life, your memory, in what people say on the bus, in the news, or just what’s in your heart.” —Carol Ann Duffy  Greg was always delighted by a story told by his mother in law about a "sortie" dinner party attended by a Doctor "Putty" Putnam who had been forced to attend an opera by his wife. When asked by a clueless guest if he enjoyed the opera, his response was  "fuck you!" When I was visiting Bear Cove and sitting next to the matriarch Greg goaded her into telling the tale. But a rum n' coke had loosened "Minnie's" tongue and when she got to Putty's answer she blurted a rather hard FUCK YOU!  Roy, hearing his bride curse thusly said across the table "Alright mother!"

  Athletic Club Flower shop      This phrase is actually the telephone greeting at Greg's uncle Johnny Tassano's flower shop at 808 W. 8th street near Flower street in downtown L.A. Greg loved the place and culled many a story and line from his experiences at a place he worked and visited fondly. Even when he wasn't employed he drove around with cousin Kent (Kevin Smith) and they had a ball observing the absurdities of modern living in the Southland. The phone was answered by different employees and each had a unique turn of "Athletic Club...flowershopppp" There was owner John Tassano, right-hand man Ronald P. Lord, "Speed," a delivery man, and Carmen who cut flowers and told odd anecdotes such as the origin of pizza. I believe Greg and Kevin could go on for weeks about the people they met on their deliveries as they set forth across the city of the angels to spread floral joy.
