Jack and Betty

Jack and Betty

Golf was always an important sport in the Creason and Sheehy households including plenty of walk-on foursomes at our beloved Rio Hondo G.C.  Golf fever had gripped the boys around 1962 and Jack and I competed for the Pius X Warror golf juggernaut during our high school years. Greg took up the sport and honed his game at the South Gate Pitch and Putt and the 19th Hole driving ranch behind the South Gate drive-in. Like all golfers we struggled and duffed many a shot but by the early 70's we were better than average and took every opportunity to get out on the links and show off our skills. We all played at the Pitch and Putt but the brave few took on the regulation 18 holes of  Rio. During the times of fever, Greg and I would just drive over to the course and try to get on by joining another twosome as appointed by the starter. We had some terrific experiences and met very interesting folks out on the fairways of Rio. On one fine Southern California gem of a day we were matched up with Jack and Betty. There was nothing momentous about the afternoon except they were so encouraging and easy-going it was a real pleasure to play alongside Jack and his diminutive wife Betty. Betty never hit a ball over 100 yards but just kept plugging away and finished every hole. Jack was the kind of guy you liked immediately and he would compliment a good drive by commenting in a tenor voice "weeeee!" and then might throw in "shanked that one eh!" We immitated Jack for decades after just because he was an example of a nice guy who loved his wife and golf in that order.
