Drums from Hurd field
Drums from
Hurd field
This one goes directly back to our South Gate experiences as kids and even later at Club Virginia. Hearing the drums at Hurd Field means the beginning of practice for the South Gate High School marching band or the South Gate Youth Band. Late in the afternoons, after classes the band would take to the high school football field and practice their chops. They even had a theme song that Greg could whistle in a spirited manner. The sound was drum heavy and could be heard from great distances, especially when I lived a block from the field. These drums coincided with the coming of Fall and the lowering of the temperature in the Gate. Hearing the drums from Hurd Field was a comforting sound harkening a return to crisp weather, jackets, courduroy pants and footall as played by the Rams since 1930. The sentence would pass back and forth between us to let the other know we were looking forward to our favorite time of year and a relief from the oppressive heat of Summer. To say "I can hear the drums from Hurd field" even though we lived 20 miles away just meant Fall is coming...baby!
